Chlorination

Whether for the production of our largest single product, monochloroacetic acid, for the manufacture of chlorination reagents and downstream fine chemicals or for custom synthesis, chlorination reactions are of central significance to CABB's products.

CABB is backward integrated into its own chlorine production and operates an integrated manufacturing system at its Pratteln site, where chlorination processes using various chlorination reagents are performed continuously or batchwise.

For reasons of environmental protection, we convey chlorination reagents in closed systems. Gaseous secondary products from chlorination processes are recycled and fed back into the integrated production system.

Liquid and gaseous chlorine is used for directly chlorinating hydrocarbons to form carbonyl, benzyl and aromatic chlorine compounds.

CABB operates its own electrolysis units to generate chlorine.

CABB performs chlorination reactions in batch and continuous processes on any scale from a small pilot scale to large commercial volumes.

Our largest single product, monochloroacetic acid, is manufactured using this technology.

Chlorination with thionyl chloride
Chlorination with thionyl chloride

Molecules bearing functional groups, such as alcohols, carboxylic acids or sulfonic acids, are chlorinated using thionyl chloride as chlorination reagent, the corresponding alkyl and aryl chlorides, carboxylic acid chlorides and sulfonyl chlorides being obtained. HCl and SO2 are formed as off-gases during chlorination reactions with thionyl chloride.

CABB can offer custom chlorination reactions within its integrated manufacturing system, in which off-gases are separated, purified and returned to the system as feedstocks. This permits sustainable production from pilot quantities to large commercial volumes using both batch and continuous processes.

CABB has extensive experience in designing chlorination reactions as continuous processes from the outset or in converting batch processes into continuous processes.

This increases yield and purity and reduces the proportion of unwanted secondary products.

Chlorination with sulphuryl chloride

Sulfuryl chloride is an alternative chlorination reagent to chlorine which acts more selectively when chlorinating carbonyl compounds, benzylic positions and aromatics.

HCl and SO2 are formed as off-gases during chlorination reactions with sulfuryl chloride.

Chloromethylation

Chloromethylation of alcohols and carboxylic acids yields the corresponding chloromethyl ethers and esters. CABBs proprietary technology guarantees a smooth reaction with high yields and very low contents of the cancerogenic by-products bis-(chloromethyl) ether. 

CABB takes advantage of its Verbund system where reagents are available from pipeline and where off-gases are completely recycled.

Oxidation with chlorine

Oxidising aliphatic thiols or thioethers with chlorine yields the corresponding sulfonyl chlorides and sulfones, advantageously providing direct access to this group of products.

You also benefit from CABB's integrated manufacturing system in which chlorine is directly available from pipeline and gaseous secondary products are sustainably put to use for further production. CABB also carries out oxidation reactions with hydrogen peroxide and air.
