Sulphonation

CABB's unique Verbund system offers the possibility to perform sustainably sulphonation and sulphation reactions of fine chemicals and intermediates. In our Verbund system we manufacture different sulphonation reagents: sulphur trioxide, oleum, sulphuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid and sulphur trioxide amine complexes.

The different reactivity and selectivity of these reagents allows a targeted choice if the suitable reagent for the corresponding reaction conditions and requirements. In this way, even sensitive substrates up to polymers can be sulphonated in a smooth and efficient way.

CABB also provides possibilities for direct sulphonation with sulphur trioxide in our multi purpose plants.

Sulphonation with SO3

The sulphonation with liquid or gaseous sulphur trioxide is the most direct and clean sulphonation method. Reactivity and selectivity can be adjusted by the reaction conditions.
CABB is perfectly equipped to perform sulphonation reactions as sulphur trioxide is produced as part of our Verbund system and can be transported in closed pipelines directly from the storage tank to multi purpose equipment.

The direct sulphonation with sulphur trioxide is in contrast to sulphonation reactions with chlorosulphonic acid, oleum or sulphuric acid the most sustainable method, as no waste or side streams are generated.

Oleum and sulphuric acid are widely used sulphonation and sulphation reagents. Reactions with these reagents require corrosion resistant production equipment.

In our Verbund system we produce these and other sulphonation reagents. CABB is perfectly equipped to perform this kind of reactions with corrosive media and reagents and produces portfolio products as well as customised intermediates.

Chlorosulphonic acid is a widely used reagent for sulphonation reactions. The amount of chlorosulphonic acid which is used, directs the course of the reaction: an equimolar amount leads to simple sulphonation whereas an excess of chlorosulphonic acid leads to direct chlorosulphonation of the molecule.

The manufacture of chlorosulphonic acid is part of our Verbund system. CABB is perfectly equipped to perform chlorosulphonation reactions because the side products which are formed in large amounts, can be completely recycled in our Verbund system.

Sulphur trioxide amine complexes offer as "transportable SO3" an interesting alternative to conventional sulphonation reagents like chlorosulphonic acid, oleum or sulphuric acid.

SO3 amine complexes are easy to handle, solid compounds, which are mainly used in pharma synthesis to introduce SO3 groups. By the selection of the amine (Lewis base strength) the reactivity of the sulfur trioxide in the complex can be directed. Strong bases like trimethylamine result in a stable, less reactive complex, whereas with dimethylformamide as amine a highly reactive complex is obtained. A balanced behaviour regarding reactivity and stability shows the pyridine SO3 complex, which is regarded as the standard reagent in this product group.

Sulphur dioxide is a widely used preservation and desinfection agent in the food industry and a bleaching agent in the paper and textile industry. CABB uses sulphur dioxide as a solvent in chemical reactions. Sulphur dioxide is generated in our Verbund system and is used at -20°C as a solvent e.g. in sulphonation reactions with sulphur trioxide, which are more selective under these conditions. Increasing the reaction temperature above -10°C lets evaporate the sulphur dioxide, which is collected and completely recycled in our Verbund system.
