The CABB integrated production system enables sustainable sulfonation and sulfation reactions of fine chemicals and intermediates. The reactivity and selectivity of the sulfonation reagents produced (sulfur trioxide, oleum, sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid and sulfur trioxide-amine complexes) allow a targeted selection of the respective reactions and requirements. This way we can gently and efficiently sulfonate even sensitive substrates including polymers.

In addition, we can carry out direct sulfonation of fine chemicals with SO3 in multi-purpose plants.

Sulfonation with liquid or gaseous sulfur trioxide is the most direct and cleanest method of sulfonation. Reactivity and selectivity can be individually adjusted according to reaction conditions. We produce sulfur trioxide in our own integrated production system and discharge it directly and cleanly from the storage tank via closed piping systems into multi-purpose reactors.

Since – in contrast to sulfonations with chlorosulfonic acid, oleum or sulfuric acid – no waste or side streams are generated, direct sulfonation with sulfur trioxide is the most sustainable method.

Chlorosulfonic acid is a widely used reagent for sulfonation reactions. The amount of chlorosulfonic acid used controls the extent of the reaction: an equimolar quantity leads to sulfonation, an excess of chlorosulfonic acid leads to direct chlorosulfonation of the molecule.

The production of chlorosulfonic acid is part of the CABB integrated production system in which the resulting gaseous by-products can be completely recycled.

As a “transportable SO3“, sulfur trioxide-amine complexes represent an interesting alternative to conventional sulfonation reagents such as chlorosulfonic acid, oleum or sulfuric acid.

SO3 amine complexes are usually easy-to-handle solids, which are mainly used in pharmaceutical synthesis for the introduction of SO3 groups. The choice of amine (base strength) controls the reactivity of the complex. Strong Lewis bases such as trimethylamine lead to a stable but less reactive complex, while dimethylformamide leads to a very reactive complex. The pyridine SO3 complex, which is the standard reagent of this product group, shows a balanced behavior with regard to reactivity and stability.

Sulfur trioxide amine complexes

Sulfur dioxide is widely used as a reagent for disinfection in the food industry and as a bleaching agent. CABB uses sulfur dioxide as a solvent. As an example, SO3 sulfonations are carried out in liquid sulfur dioxide at -20°C. Under these conditions sulfonations are more selective. By increasing the reaction temperature above -10°C, sulfur dioxide evaporates and is collected by the integrated production system in order to be completely recycled. Other reactions can also be carried out in this gentle and selective manner.
